ERIC T. LASCELLES

We were contacted by Angus Creighton, whose Uncle Eric Lascelles flew with 601 Squadron in Italy during the war.  Very sadly the young Eric was killed in June of 1944 while with the squadron.

In one of those odd bits of coincidence, I had just recelently been contacted by the family of another wartime 601 pilot who also with the squadron in Italy – Bill ‘Murdoch’ Matheson.  Murdoch had written a book about his time with 601, and as fate would have it within the book he had a photograph of Eric’s grave, and a story about him and some others going out to find Eric’s body after he had been shot down and killed.  Angus had never seen these initial photographs of his Uncle’s grave, and just by fate we had been provided with them just before he made contact!  The short of it is that Angus was able to get in touch with Murdoch (who as of writing is happily alive and well) and learn something more of his Uncle.  It’s the kind of thing that makes the effort of the website so very rewarding.

Angus very kindly provided me with the following photographs pertaining to Eric’s service.  The hope is that by putting up this section we can provide some bit of remembrance to a very brave young man who gave his life at the young age of just twenty.
